One-Way Ride to Setoda

A classic Shimanami journey — bridges, islands, and a seaside finish

This is the ride most visitors imagine when they think of the Shimanami Kaido.

We depart from Onomichi and head west across a series of islands, crossing sweeping suspension bridges with wide-open views of the Seto Inland Sea. Along the way, we ride quiet coastal roads, pass citrus groves, and stop in small fishing towns that most travelers miss.

We finish in Setoda — a historic port town known for its lemon groves, waterfront cafés, and relaxed island atmosphere.

Guests may return to Onomichi via public ferry (tickets purchased at the terminal – about ¥2,000).

No backtracking. Just a forward-moving journey across the sea.

Hidden Coastal Ride to Tomonoura

A full-day coastal journey — ride out, ride back

This is the route almost no Shimanami cyclists take.

We leave Onomichi and wind through the quiet roads of Mukaishima before crossing by public ferry from Uta to Tosaki. From there, the landscape changes — the coastline opens up and the cycling traffic disappears.

Long ocean views. Fishing villages. Empty stretches of road where it feels like you have the Inland Sea to yourself.

By midday, we reach Tomonoura — a beautifully preserved harbor town with Edo-period charm and a relaxed seaside atmosphere. We’ll stop for lunch and time to explore before turning around and riding the coastline back.

No transfers. No shortcuts. Just a complete, satisfying loop.

Distance: ~60 km
Level: Moderate to Strong
Duration: 6–7 hours
Ideal for: Confident riders seeking a quieter, more immersive experience

Highlights

  • Rarely ridden coastal roads with minimal cycling traffic
  • Long, uninterrupted sea views
  • Lunch in historic Tomonoura
  • A true out-and-back journey by bike
